Give your makeup bag a spring refresh!
Spring is all about fresh starts, and your skincare and makeup routine is a great place to begin. Just like you swap out sweaters for lighter layers, your skincare and makeup can use a seasonal refresh too. Whether you’re simplifying your routine or switching to cleaner formulas, it’s about finding what works for you now. Your skin (and your bathroom drawer) will thank you.

Take inventory of everything (yes, we mean everything). Start by emptying out your entire beauty collection… Yes, even that lip balm hiding at the bottom of your bag or the half-used serum from last summer. Then, go through each item using this quick checklist:
- Review expiration dates (especially on SPF products)
- Discard anything you haven’t used in the past year
- Get rid of products with unusual odors or changes in texture
If a product is expired, separated, or seems questionable in any way, it’s best to part ways with it.
Swap in Lighter Formulas
As temperatures rise, your skin typically needs less heavy hydration and coverage than it did during the colder months. Consider updating your routine with products that feel lighter and more breathable:
- Opt for a lightweight gel or water-based moisturizer
- Try a tinted SPF in place of foundation for a more natural finish
- Use cream blush or highlighter to add a fresh, dewy glow
These small swaps can help your skin feel more comfortable and refreshed as the seasons change.

Look at Ingredients
If you’ve been curious about cleaning up your beauty products, this is a great time to start. No need to overhaul everything overnight — just start checking labels and learning about which ingredients you may want to avoid for yourself. Common ingredients to watch for and read up on:
- Fragrance/parfum
- Parabens
- Phthalates
- Oxybenzone (in sunscreen)
- Formaldehyde releasers (yes, really!)
Apps like EWG Skin Deep or Think Dirty can help you decode labels.
Wash Your Brushes + Tools
It’s easy to forget, but makeup brushes and beauty tools can collect bacteria, oil, and product buildup — all of which can mess with your skin.
- Wash brushes weekly with gentle soap and warm water
- Let them air dry flat, preferably in sunlight for an extra bacteria-busting boost
Hope this helps!
