We are BIG fans of a good manicure + pedicure here at Women of Today. Our entire team is obsessed with nails … But Camila takes the cake when it comes to a love of nails — She has a nail polish collection that any salon would envy. Suffice it to say, someone is always painting their nails around the Women of Today headquarters.
In recent years, we have become more aware that not all nail polishes are created equal. In fact, many of your household nail polish brands are known to contain toxic chemicals. Knowing this, we have started to seek out brands that are free from toxic contaminates. But first you might be wondering … What are the nail polish contaminants that you need to know about?!
A simple Google search will yield a TON of results about why some nail polish is so toxic and harmful. One article that we found to be informative was this one from Huffington Post. The website Wellness Mamma also has a great explanation of what the most common chemicals found in nail polish are, and why they are harmful:
Toulene– A chemical known to cause reproductive harm and dizziness. It is also found in gasoline and the CDC warns that it can cause central nervous system problems.
Formaldehyde– This known carcinogen is found in many nail polishes. It is also used to preserve dead things and when used in lab preparations, there are strict warnings to avoid inhalation or skin contact.
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) -This chemical is banned in Europe and is known to cause reproductive problems, especially in boys. The Environmental Working Group classifies this chemical as the highest danger level and warns that it can cause organ problems and endocrine disruption.
Of course, always do your own research and make your own conclusions about what products are right for you. But today, we wanted to share with you all 7 of our favorite non-toxic nail polish brands. We have used them, we love them, and we turn to them for a non-toxic manicure.
Enjoy! Beijos xx
