Homemade Marinara Sauce

Discover the story
This pantry staple is even more delicious made from home!

Marinara sauce is likely a staple in your home! It’s perfect to use for pasta but also great used as a base for pizza, a dipping sauce for breadsticks, or even a flavorful topping for grilled meats and seafood.

While store-bought marinara sauces offer convenience, many brands add sugar or other unnecessary ingredients to their recipes. Plus, there’s something special about making your own from scratch! And we love that it allows you to tailor the flavors to your liking.

Homemade Marinara Sauce

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 6 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 2 28 oz cans of San Marzano tomatoes
  • ½ cup fresh basil, chopped
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Place a medium saucepan over medium heat and the olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add the chopped onion stirring often until soft and golden (about 5 min). Add minced garlic and stir 1 min, or until fragrant.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a light boil then reduce heat and simmer partially covered for about 15 minutes.
  • Add the fresh basil, then allow the sauce to cool and blend until smooth using an immersion or regular blender.
